Teaching the Alphabet
The first step in teaching a child to read is to teach the letters of the alphabet. An important predictor of reading achievement is to be able to easily identify the letters! Download and print the Free Hot Chocolate and Marshmallow Letter Match to introduce the alphabet and their sounds.
How to Use the Hot Chocolate and Marshmallow Match
1. Print the Hot Chocolate and Marshmallow Match Game below.
2. Laminate the hot chocolate mugs and matching marshmallows. THIS is my favorite laminator.
3. Cut out the hot chocolate mugs and marshmallows carefully.
4. Play the Game! Depending on the level of the child, you can work on identifying letters or work on identifying the letter sounds. For example, if working on identifying letters, point to the mug and ask, “What letter is this”? Then have them find the matching marshmallow letter. If working on letter sounds, hold up a mug with a letter and ask what sound the letter makes. Then find the matching marshmallow. You can have kids simply place the correct marshmallow to the chocolate mugs, or you can use velcro dots so the marshmallows stay on the mugs without falling off. Simply place a velcro dot on the top of each hot chocolate mug and on the back of each marshmallow. Repeat until all the letters have been matched.
